pathosFrom the fourth century BCE to the first century CE, artists of the Mediterranean world created richly detailed bronze sculptures of unparalleled realism and expression. Only a few of these ancient masterpieces survive. Jens Daehner, associate curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum who recently curated a celebrated exhibition of Hellenistic bronzes for the Getty Museum, discusses the importance of bronze in antiquity and artistic innovations of the Hellenistic period.
